About
My son got a great full-time position with a company he had worked for part-time in high school after he graduated. He’s always been a smart kid with money. So much so, that he saved up from side hustles and part-time gigs his entire youth to be able to purchase a house right before his 19th birthday (and nope, I didn’t co-sign). A few months after going full-time, he was offered a position as a district manager with the company, with a catch – they wanted to transfer him 3 hours away. So he rented out his primary home, and got an apartment in the new location. As a kid with a money-oriented mind, renting didn’t sit right with him. He came to me asking if he should buy a house out there, but I reminded him that we didn’t know how long the company planned to keep him there.
Its just him and his girlfriend, and their cat and rabbit. So, I made the suggestion that he consider purchasing an RV for them to live in, parking it permanently at a site in whatever locale his company had him in at the time. He was a little unsure, but one trip to an RV lot convinced him. He had no idea how nice these trailers were in comparison to how much they cost.
One month before his 20th birthday, he and his girlfriend purchased a brand new 2024 Wildcat One 5th Wheel. It is gorgeous. All totaled, what he pays for the RV loan coupled with the expenses of renting a spot at an RV park, they reduced their living expenses by almost $1,000 over what they were paying in rent. And, sure enough, three months later, the company offered him another advancement opportunity. And once again, there was another catch – this time, they wanted to transfer him 2,300 miles away. And there’s already a future move being discussed in another 9-12 months time.
When he bought his RV, because they planned to keep it parked at a spot vs. moving it around, we didn’t see the need for him to purchase a truck to tow it. Instead, he is using RV towing companies to move it around. We started this site after we had to scour to get basic information about companies that tow RVs and struggled to know the right questions to ask. We’re also learning a lot about RV life (he’s the one living there, but I get play by plays of all the details). So, this is our attempt to share all things we learn first-hand about owning, maintaining, and moving a 5th wheel trailer with the internet. He’s doing the work, and I’m the proverbial pen putting it onto the site.
He has zero regret about his decision to get into RV life. He loves it so much in fact, that he has set a long-term goal for him, his girlfriend and I to start our own RV park within the next 5 years and potentially an RV towing company within the next 10. Stay tuned!
